Why Autumn

The hills come back into focus.

Every other season, Jhaltola is beautiful. In autumn, the monsoon's version fades and a sharper one takes its place. The haze lifts off the valley. Trishul, Nanda Devi, Nanda Kot, and Panchachuli return to the skyline, closer than they've looked in months. The forest dries out, the paths firm up, and the light turns gold by four.

The crowds that fill the Nainital road, the Chaukori viewpoints, the Mukteshwar cafes - they arrive in autumn too, right on schedule. They don't reach Jhaltola. The 7 Suites are yours. The 1,000 acres are yours. The clarity is only interrupted by how far you can actually see.

What a day looks like

Loosely. Without agenda.

Most people hear "seclusion" and picture a room, Misty's is the other kind — a thousand acres of it, walkable, with nothing of the outside world reaching in.

Chai returns to the verandah.

Mist does not linger long in autumn. By the time your tea arrives, the valley below it is already visible.

The forest at its greenest.

The forest at its greenest.

The paths and the forest are at their fullest, greenest life right after the monsoon - before winter quiets everything down. The Jadapani trails and Lambakeshwar path are ready to be walked.

The trek to the viewpoint is worth doing without hesitation this season - clear skies the whole way there.

A picnic wherever you stop.

A picnic wherever you stop.

Pack a lunch, walk until you find a spot worth stopping at. In autumn, most spots qualify.

The fire is lit, and the sky comes out.

The fire is lit, and the sky comes out.

Clear autumn nights are the best of the year for stars. Someone will point out one you have never noticed before.

What to bring

Pack for both ends of the day

Warm layers - nights drop to 5-12°C

A light jacket for daytime - a comfortable 12-20°C

Sunglasses - the clearest skies of the year

A camera - for the peaks, finally visible

Good walking shoes - dry trails, easy underfoot

A book for the fireside evenings

Why travel this far

Why go all the way to Jhaltola, past the easier stops?

Nainital, Mukteshwar, Chaukori are closer, simpler to reach - the obvious choices for an autumn trip to the hills. Jhaltola asks for a longer drive, and a deliberate choice.

In autumn, when everywhere else in Kumaon is at its busiest, this is still the one place that isn't. The forest is yours. So is the view.
