Why Monsoon

The hills are most
themselves when it rains.

Every other season, Jhaltola is beautiful. In monsoon, it turns a colour it isn't any other time of year. The forest deepens. Clouds sit in the valley below the verandah. The streams you walked past in May now have a voice.

The crowds that fill the Nainital road, the Chaukori viewpoints, the Mukteshwar cafés — they aren't here. The 8 rooms are yours. The 1,000 acres are yours. The silence is only interrupted by rain.

What a week looks like

Loosely. Without agenda.

A cup of chai on a verandah with mist in the valley

Morning

Birdsong before the mist lifts.

Chai arrives on the verandah. Bluejays, robins, something you won't be able to name but will listen for every morning after.

Rain running down a window panel

Early Afternoon

The rain arrives. Committed.

Pull on your gumboots and walk into it, or sit with the sound of it on the roof. Both are correct answers.

An open book resting by a window

The Hours Between

The book. The project. Or nothing at all.

Nothing is harder than it sounds and worth every day it takes to arrive.

A forest trail winding through mist between tall trees

Some Mornings

Raju takes you into the forest.

The Jadapani trails and Lambakeshwar path feel different in the rain - darker, closer. You come back muddy and quieter.

An evening bonfire glowing against dark hills

Evening

The fire is lit before dinner.

Someone from the team has taught your travelling companion the name of the bird you saw this morning.

What to bring

Gumboots or waterproof shoes

The project you keep postponing

A raincoat - not for protection, for permission

Warm layers - evenings drop to 14°C

The book you've been meaning to read

Less than you think you need of everything else

Why Jhaltola and not the others

They have the views. Jhaltola has the views and 1,000 acres of silence.

Nainital, Mukteshwar, Chaukori - beautiful in monsoon, if you can get the views through the clouds. But the same roads that fill in May don't empty in July. The cafés stay busy. The viewpoints stay crowded.

Jhaltola is 1,000 acres of private forest with 8 rooms. In monsoon, those 8 rooms are almost never all occupied at once. The forest is yours. So is the quiet.

What unfolded was a quiet, deeply restorative retreat. Their quiet efficiency made it easy to focus on nothing but the day's rhythm.

Due to cloudy weather we couldn't get the stunning views of the far away mountains. The experience was just lovely.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. The property sits at 6,200 feet in Upper Kumaon - away from the flood-prone lower valleys. The approach road (last 4km) is jeep-only and managed by Misty year-round. Guests' cars are parked safely 4km from the estate and Misty's jeep handles the rest regardless of conditions.
Probably not, or only occasionally. Monsoon clouds sit at the mountain level. The views are replaced by something else — mist in the valley, the forest in full green, clouds moving through the estate. Guests who've visited in similar conditions have given 5 stars. The property holds up when the peaks are hidden.
Daytime temperatures range from 16–22°C. Evenings drop to 12–15°C - warm layers are needed after dark. Rain is frequent, often arriving in the afternoon and continuing through the night. Some days are clear in the morning before the clouds build. Pack a raincoat, warm layers, and gumboots.

Kathgodam to Jhaltola is approximately 150km, around 5–6 hours by road. From Delhi NCR, plan for 12–13 hours including a break. Two routes work well: Delhi–Moradabad–Tanakpur–Lohaghat, or Delhi–Corbett–Ranikhet–Almora. Both are unhurried roads - the drive is part of the experience.
